Look for Jesus in the Old Testament

Read: Isaiah 53 NIV – Who has believed our message and to – Bible Gateway

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 NIV

It has always amazed me how some people, even Christians, dismissed the Old Testament as having no relevance for today. The New Testament has all the ‘Red Letter’ words of Jesus’ teaching the way of salvation and how to love God and others as yourself. The Pauline Epistles teach us how to walk in the spirit, live the Christian life, and the importance of the church body. And who isn’t fascinated with the end times in the book of Revelation if we can understand it. But there is all of that and more in the Old Testament if we only take the time to go through it.

The most important aspect of the Old Testament, in fact the entire Bible, is that it is about Jesus Christ. When keeping that in mind you’ll begin to find new meaning in the stories you have heard and read as far back as when you were child. Simply put; God created the heavens and the earth, He created us, we sinned against Him, we needed a savior to take our punishment and reconcile us back to God, the Old Testament paves the way for the Messiah born in Bethlehem and there are even prophesies of the end times. It’s all in there.

Isaiah 53 speaks of Jesus’ suffering sacrifice by dying for our sins. This chapter accurately describes the events of Jesus’ death written 700 years earlier. “He was despised and rejected by mankind……Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised……Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering……But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities……He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter……He was assigned a grave with the wicked, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth……For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Is.53 niv)

It’s kind of hard to deny that Isaiah was prophesying about Jesus Christ. It’s not a coincidence, but a factual truth found in the New Testament gospels. Jesus is found all throughout the Old Testament for He is God the Son, the second person of the trinity. The Old Testament proves who Jesus is and what He has done as any portion of Scripture from the New Testament. You can look for Jesus in the Old Testament. He’s there!

Thoughts of the World

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

When it comes to spiritual matters and the things of God, the world has its endless thoughts on the truth of the matter. The world will inform us what is and what is not truth, or it will tell us it’s inside us and we will discover it by searching within ourselves. Just be yourself and love yourself. Then there are so called minsters of the gospel preaching a feel-good message of positivity and good works. The apostle Paul needed to defend his ministry against some of the same things we witness in our world today. False prophets were doing their work during Paul’s day as in ours. Paul, himself, was accused of being a false prophet and only in it for money. The thoughts about God in the world are many, and all are against the truth and His salvation message.

Paul was unrelenting in the defense of his ministry and the gospel. He stated, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2Cor.10:5 niv) Anything that slightly resembled an alternative view of the gospel pitting itself against the Lord God, Paul demolished those arguments. They cannot be allowed to stand. Paul knew those distorted thoughts about God lead to confusion and heartache. That is why he took every one of those thoughts and conformed them to Christ.

Christians today need to rally behind Paul’s example of boldness in demolishing the false narratives of God in our culture. Sitting silent on the sidelines while the world is scoring points does not advance the kingdom of God. The Lord has given us all we need to inform the world of the truth, His Word, the Bible. It’s time we use it boldly to explain the truth about God.

Truth Thrown to the Ground

Read: Daniel 8:9-14 NIV – Out of one of them came another horn, – Bible Gateway

“Because of rebellion, the LORD’s people and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.” Daniel 8:12 NIV

Photo by Mick Haupt on Unsplash

Interpretation of Biblical prophecy is not a subject to take lightly but should be taken it very seriously. Much of Biblical prophecy is hard to understand and explain, but not all of it. God has spelled out future events for us to understand to the best of our ability with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. With that being said, there are many interpretations of Scripture concerning the end times among some of the most gifted scholars and theologians throughout history. Are some right and others wrong? How about you, are you right, are you wrong? The debate goes on.

God gave us the Bible, to understand. If we cannot understand what he wrote to us, then what is the benefit of having it? I concede, not every Christian understands everything in Scripture, but there is enough we can understand with the Spirit’s help. Daniel’s visions of prophecy sound too confusing to comprehend, but that may not always be the case if we think them through. Today’s short reading in Daniel chapter 8 predicts the persecution of the Jews in the second half of the second century B.C. from Antiochus IV the ruler of the Seleucid kingdom. Antiochus’ actions included destroying copies of Scripture and entering the most Holy Place sacrificing pigs on the altar. Some see similarities to antichrist in the last days of the tribulation. This could be true.

What do you know for sure? Daniel 8:12 says, ‘truth was thrown to the ground.’ We know in those last days, as is the case today, the truth of God’s Word will be denied. Christians will be persecuted during the tribulation as they are today, a false god will be worshiped, and truth will be thrown to the ground. So, don’t worry if you don’t understand it all. Rejoice in what you know.

It’s Time to Know Your Future

Read: Daniel 7:1-8 NLT – Daniel’s Vision of Four Beasts – Bible Gateway

Photo by Xan White on Unsplash

There was a saying back in the day, ‘if you want to know what the Bible says about the future, just watch the evening news.’ That still applies today by opening our cell phones to our favorite news and information app. If you want to know what the Bible says about the past, just open a history book or watch a documentary on the History Channel. You’ll find history predicted in the Holy Scriptures.

A perfect example is the prophet Daniel’s visions in the Old Testament. Daniel saw a vision of God’s plan for the future kingdoms of the world. First revealed to King Nebuchadnezzar in a dream then revealed to Daniel in a vision for him to interpret it. Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of a statue in the form of a man describes four future kingdoms. Daniel, years later, saw a vision of four beasts coming out of the water, all different from one another, and representing the same four future kingdoms.

In reading our text from Daniel we see history unfolding in the prophet’s visions. The first beast was like a lion describing the Babylonian Empire in Daniel’s time, vicious and powerful. The second like a bear with three ribs in its mouth of conquered nations is the Medo-Persian Empire from 539 B.C. – 330 B.C. The third beast Daniel saw was the Greek Empire led by Alexander the Great, 330 B.C. – 63 B.C. in the form of a leopard representing the speed in which he took power. And the fourth beast is unidentified but is a terrifying, dreadful, and very strong beast. The Roman Empire fits this description as the legs of iron in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. History teaches us these events occurred. The Bible teaches us these events were predicted through the prophets before they occurred. Scripture predicts the future with total accuracy. Daniel and the rest of the Old Testament prophets have it all laid out for us in the Bible. It’s time for all of us to know our future.

The Bible’s Affect

Read: Psalm 119:169-176 NLT – Taw O LORD, listen to my cry; give me – Bible Gateway

Photo by Rafael Cosquiere on Pexels.com

Books have had a tremendous impact throughout history. Individually, multiple lives have changed from reading a book. Societies have been formed based on some writings from influential people. Educational institutions have thousands upon thousands of books covering every facet of education. Public and school libraries place books of all categories on their shelves for the information seeker, the knowledge and self-help seeker, the avid reader, and for those looking for sure enjoyment. In one way or another, each book will influence the reader if read carefully seeking the author’s intent.

The Bible is no different. It will influence you and have the biggest effect on your life than any other book. Dr. Charles C. Ryrie lists five affects’ that God’s Word has on those who read it with the proper intent.

1. The Word affects the mind. “O LORD, listen to my cry; give me the discerning mind you promised.” (Ps.119:169 nlt) Asking God to give you a discerning mind is guaranteed because He promises to do so. As we read Scripture, we will develop a desire to know more and understand more.

    2. The Word affects the mouth. “Let praise flow from my lips, for you have taught me your decrees. Let my tongue sing about your word, for all your commands are right.” (Ps.119:171-172 nlt) Understanding that all God’s ordinances are just and right will result in praise to Him.

    3. The Word affects the will.  “Give me a helping hand, for I have chosen to follow your commandments.” (Ps.119:173 nlt) Realizing God’s commands are right; we choose to follow them.

    4. The Word affects the emotions. “O LORD, I have longed for your rescue, and your instructions are my delight.” (Ps.119:174 nlt) We can’t help but be emotional when God rescues from the darkness of sin within us.

    5. The Word affects the conscience. “I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands.” (Ps.119:176 nlt) As we read the Bible and begin to understand it there will be a growing knowledge of how far we drift away on the daily basis. We ask the Lord, our shepherd to come and find us and bring us back into the fold.

The Bible’s affect will change your life and encourage you daily. It is the most influential book ever written. Other books have the potential to change your present life, but only God’s Word can change your present life and change your future destiny in eternity. It’s time to take it off the shelf and read it.

    Water to Quench Your Soul

“Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, ‘Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink!’ For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” John 4:37-38 NLT

Photo by Deborah L Carlson on Unsplash

It is springtime in Pennsylvania, and I once again started my weekly chore of mowing our lawn. I couldn’t help but notice the brown patches still part of our lawn from last year’s drought. In fact, we are not totally out of the woods yet, needing a few more healthy rain events. Water is essential for growth and life itself. The rain we had caused the grass to grow in areas not severely affected by lack of rain last summer. But much more water and sun are needed to bring the entire lawn back to complete health.

Our spiritual lives can become dry as a drought driven patch of grass. Just as water is essential for our very lives, so is the spiritual water Jesus offers us essential for our spiritual lives. We first need it to save our souls from spiritual death to eternal life. As Jesus told the woman at the well, “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (Jn.4:14 nlt) Jesus is the spiritual water we need for salvation and eternal life. He offers it to us freely. Jesus is authorized to do so for He paved the way by dying on the cross for our sins recognized this Good Friday and rising from the dead on Easter morning to secure our eternal life.

Spiritual water is also needed for our souls to be refreshed daily by Jesus through prayer and reading His Word. As Christians our eternal home may be secured, but we still need daily spiritual water to help us grow, be fruitful, and not become a dried-up patch of grass. It is easy to develop a thirst for the things of the world, but soon we find out it never satisfies, yet we keep drinking from the fountain without quenching our souls. The Lord Jesus has the water to guarantee our salvation and to quench our thirsty souls. Why not take a drink from Jesus’ fountain today.

    The Perfect Dish

“Every word of God proves true…. Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.” Proverbs 30:5-6 NLT

    Photo AI Generated wordpress

Those who enjoy the art of cooking experiment by creating new recipes for whatever dish they are preparing. Always striving to make each dish better than the one before until one day they create the perfect dish, then the recipe becomes complete to be used and enjoyed by everyone. There is no need to add any other ingredients or take any out, it is finished.

The Bible is a lot like that perfect dish you have just created. The Holy Spirit was not experimenting when writing through the various authors over the years, but each one was adding to the overall message of the Bible. Each ingredient added enhanced the flavor causing the psalmist to say, “How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.” (Ps.119:103 nlt) And “Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” (Ps.34:8 nlt)

The Bible is the perfect dish for all to enjoy. It provides nourishment for our souls and gives us strength needed in times of adversity. It is the dish that includes the perfect ingredients leading us to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. Note the words written in the book of Proverbs, “Every word of God proves true……Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.” (30:5-6 nlt) Nothing needs to be added to the Bible, although many have tried over the years and are still trying, and nothing needs to be removed as some have recently advocated.

Just as you would not want anyone to add or subtract from your perfect dish, God does not want any words added or removed from His finished product. Those who do will lead others and themselves down a path of destruction. “And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.” (Rev.22:18-19 nlt)

God has created the perfect dish for us. Let’s enjoy it.

    Don’t Forget the Inbounder

“But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” James 1:25 NLT

    Photo AI Generated wordpress

The other evening, I was watching the final seconds of a NCAA men’s college basketball tournament game. Game tied, the inbounder put the ball in play then immediately set himself up to retrieve the ball under the basket for an easy dunk. Game over! The commentator cried out, ‘Don’t forget the inbounder.’ He wasn’t covered. Both squads had their final instructions for that final play from their coaches. The offense played it perfectly. The defense failed to execute, forgetting what they heard in the bench huddle, leaving the inbounder wide open.

Reading a verse from the book of James this morning, I realized how easy it is to forget something we just heard or read. James writes, “But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” (Ja.1:25 nlt) When things go wrong in my life most of the time it can be traced back to forgetting what I heard from Scripture. Obviously, there are no blessings when struggling with the results of disobedience. But after reading and hearing the Word preached, if we do what is heard and not forget, God promises blessings.

God’s Word is our lifeline in this world leading us to eternal life in the next. It is His game plan drawn up for us to follow in this game called life. Executing it will lead to a life full of blessings, and assurance of salvation. Forgetting what we hear will result in more than losing a game but losing our very souls.

    A Christian Perspective

For it before you were against it

“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.” Luke 11:23 NLT

Photo by Tesla Fans Schweiz on Unsplash

Advocating for something before speaking against is known in the political realm as being for something before being against it. The catch phrase dates to a presidential candidate in the 2004 presidential election who made the statement, ‘I voted for it before I voted against it’ in reference to a Senate bill. Ever since, the phrase has been used to display the on-going hypocrisy in politics. A prime example are the recent attacks on Tesla dealerships in the United States and now spreading to other countries. CBS News reports, “Graffiti on a Tesla dealership sign. Molotov cocktails thrown in another dealership’s lot. Tesla charging stations set on fire. Across the country, the electric vehicle company’s facilities and vehicles are being hit with protests and violence over Elon Musk’s role in the Trump administration.” (1) From the Associated Press, “Cybertrucks set ablaze. Bullets and Molotov cocktails aimed at Tesla showrooms. Attacks on property carrying the logo of Elon Musk’s electric-car company are cropping up across the U.S. and overseas.” (2)

What was once hailed as a great achievement and supported very passionately for the protection of the environment, is now being destroyed by the same people due to politics. On the other hand, those who adamantly oppose electric cars are now finding a change of heart due to their politics. Hypocrisy knows no boundaries. They were for it before they were against it and vice versa.

Some Christians today have the same mindset. Due to pressure from the culture, what they were once for based on a Biblical conviction and worldview they are now against. Finding it easier to go along with the crowd they are persuaded their beliefs do not reflect the norms of society, are outdated, not respectful of our time, and should be abandoned. A word of caution in support of that kind of thinking; society may have changed, but God never changes. His Word stands alone.

Jesus said, “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.” (Lk.11:23 nlt) When we start to move away from Scripture and Jesus’ words to adapt to the world we are working against Him. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2Tim.3:16 nlt) Jesus, God the Son, used Scripture throughout His ministry on earth to teach us right from wrong. Scripture has not changed, and just because Jesus while on earth did not address certain issues does not mean they are no longer relevant or weren’t relevant in Jesus’ day.

Opposing certain passages of Scripture due to our politics or changing culture is opposing Jesus. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Heb.13:8 nlt) May Jesus’ followers never be heard to say, ‘we were for it, before we were against it.’

    The Art of Persuasion

“My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!” Proverbs 1:10 NLT

Photo by Sincerely Media on Unsplash

Simply put, the art of persuasion is to convince someone or a group of people to change their thinking. There have been books published, classes taught, and videos produced explaining the techniques available to enhance your ability to master the art of persuasion. Persuading others can have both positive and negative effects. People can be persuaded to do good or bad, even Christians.

Some of our best friends practice the art of persuasion. They may have the best of intentions in what they are trying to convince us to do or be part of, but it may not be the best thing, or worse contrary to Scripture. As Jesus says we are to ‘be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.’ (Mt.10:16) There has been a blending of the modern-day culture with the church and Christianity in general for the last few decades. Activities we would have never considered engaging in some time ago, we now accept and participate with a little persuasion.

Solomon says in the book of Proverbs, “My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!” (Pr.1:10 nlt) It may be difficult referring to our friends as sinners, but the Bible says all are sinners, and that includes you and me. (Ro.3:23) Christians need to pray for discernment when tempted to participation in something the Lord would disapprove of. An old anti-drug slogan simply said, ‘just say no.’ An anti-enticement slogan could be ‘it’s OK to turn your back on them.’

There are many resources to teach us the art of persuasion including the Word of God. The Holy Spirit guiding us through the Bible will teach us the art of knowing right from wrong, convicting us of our sin and our need of a savior showing us the way of salvation. Then we too can use the art of persuasion on our friends.
