A Christian Perspective

The American Church is at the Threshold

“Turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.” Numbers 14:25 NIV

Israel experienced the Lord delivering them from the bondage of the Egyptians. He had freed them to follow Him as He was leading them to the Promised land. They witnessed God’s might power in opening the Red Sea to cross over and escape from the pursuing chariots of the Egyptian army. They woke up every morning to the daily supply of food provided for them by the Lord. When they needed water, God provided it. But it seems they had a short memory of what God had promised them, and more importantly in what they had witnessed during their short time in the wilderness.

The children of Israel were on the threshold of entering the Promised Land. God had led them to the door of opportunity to continue following His lead. Everything was in place, the Lord had already given them the victory, Moses had the land surveyed to know what to expect, and now it was time to fulfill the Lord’s promise. But Israel failed to take advantage of the promise He had given them. They missed out by not following through with God’s plans, refusing to go in due to fear. One of the saddest verses in Scripture contains the Lord’s words, “Turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.” (Nu. 14:25) They forfeited their opportunity to enter the Promised Land and were told to turn around and go back in the opposite direction.

The Christian church in America is at the threshold of an open door for ministry perhaps not seen in quite a while. There are youth movements springing up on college campuses, the sports world has an increasing number of athletes no longer intimidated to express their faith, and there is a more openness in referring to God across the public, the news media, and even in our politics.

Is the church in America ready, is to cross the threshold into this new opportunity where God is leading? If we’re committed, there is no turning back. May we remember all the Lord has for us over the years, He has proven Himself faithful. May we continue be faithful, and not hear the Lord say to us, ‘turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert.’

Rewarded for Our Work

“But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!” 2 Chronicles 15:7 NKJV

As I have gotten older, I have learned a few things, like you’re never too old to learn something new. I also learned there is always something to do, particularly things that need to be done. They don’t go away just because you have gotten a little older. Since my retirement from my full-time vocation, I have been just as busy with the work that is before me. There is always work to do around the home my wife and I share, work around the neighborhood, and work in and around the church I belong to.

One of the greatest joys is having the opportunity to serve the Lord within the church with the work we do. A major part of that enjoyment is the men I work with, all of us retired, imagine that! I am thankful for the grace they show me as I work alongside them. Full disclosure, there is a lot that I cannot do, even some simple things. I’m not much of a handyman and I know my colleagues would agree. But eventually, I get there, it just takes a little time.

There is a verse in 2 Chronicles which says, “But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded” (15:7 nkjv) Now I believe I can speak for my friends as well as myself that we do not do the work for a reward or a pat on the back. It is for God’s glory and for the ministry to continue in our city. Scripture does infer that rewards will be given in heaven, although we won’t hold on to them very long, for we will lay them at our savior’s feet.

Whatever work you do, either for the church, your home, your neighborhood, or if you’re still actively employed, do it all for the glory of God. Make sure you have something to lay at Jesus’ feet.

Christ’s International Church

Read: Ephesians 2:17-22 NLT – He brought this Good News of peace to – Bible Gateway

“Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us……You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.” Ephesians 2:18-19 NLT

God has implanted in each of us whom he created a desire to belong. Nobody really wants to be alone, although at times it is a pleasant escape. A sense of not belonging is unhealthy both physically and emotionally. God did not create you to be alone and He has created others with that same need, so no one needs to be alone. God also desires a relationship with you ensuring that you never need to be alone.

Our number one and most important relationship is to be with God, the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But on this earth, it is essential we have relationships with other human beings. It’s only natural. Human relationships form from a commonality between people and people groups, and that is only natural but can also be very unhealthy over time. God has provided a safety net for those with a longing to belong but find themselves on the outside looking in, it’s Christ’s International Church.

The apostle Paul explained to the church in Ephesus that the Jews and Gentiles were now one in God by what Christ has done for them. “You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.” (Eph.2:19 nlt) The Gentiles make up anyone who is not of Jewish descent. Therefore, all people, and all people groups are welcomed into God’s family. Everyone who has repented of their sins and accepted Christ as the only way of salvation is a member of Christ’s International Church. If you have done so you now belong, now go and find a church and join with others where you belong.

The Lord’s Honored Guest

Read: Psalm 23 KJV – The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not – Bible Gateway

“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” Psalm 23:5 KJV

Being held in a position of honor has always been a bit uncomfortable for me, not that it has happened very often. I’m thankful for the times in my life they have occurred. Some years back my wife and me along with my spiritual mentor and his wife received such an honor from the church we belonged to for we both were moving out of the area. It was a pleasant surprise, a joyous occasion, and a humble experience in the recognition we all received.

On such occasions we may also feel unworthy to receive such an honor. Yet, those providing the festivities have a different opinion. It was based on the love we had for each other in being part of the church family, the family of God. In reality, we are all sinners saved by grace through Christ’s love for us. As He has loved us, we love one another in our church family. The church held this special honor because of their love for us.

The 23rd Psalm, probably the most familiar passage in Scripture, ends with an honored guest experience. The psalm is written by King David, and he reveals that he is the Lord’s honored guest at His table. “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.” (Ps.23:5a kjv) God is the gracious host providing a banquet and treating David as an honor guest. David was overwhelmed saying, “my cup runneth over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” (Ps.235b-6a kjv)

That same honor applies to us today. If anything should make us feel uncomfortable or unworthy this would be it. The Lord God preparing a banquet for us and seating us as a guest of honor. But it is because of His great love for us that he invites us to His table to partake of His salvation prepared for us. You’re the Lord’s honored guest, don’t decline the invitation. R.S.V.P.

Pray for our Pastors and Elders

“Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you……lead them by your own good example” 1 Peter 5:2a, 3b NLT

Photo by Frank Alarcon on Unsplash

Our church pastors and elders have a God-given task entrusted to them in shepherding or caring for the members in the church they serve. We are God’s flock, the church, His children. So are the pastors and elders. Even though we all are guided by Jesus, the Great Shepherd, the leaders of the church have that special assignment to lead those entrusted to them by loving the sheep, caring for the sheep, and feeding the sheep. And if you look around the church, in fact any church, you’ll realize why we need to pray for our pastors and elders. We are all like sheep and if not guided by godly shepherds we will go our way. We could be a stubborn bunch.

If that sounds a little harsh for some of you. I will just say, me included, if the shoe fits wear it. We are all not that bad, but we are all not that good either. Christians need the guidance of God’s earthly shepherds in the world in which we live. Their teaching, prayers, counselling, wisdom, and love are essential for the members of the church. Yes, there are other fine Christian teaching organizations, but nothing is as valuable as gathering as a church family for worship, love, care, and teaching from God’s appointed shepherds. The apostle Peter instructed the elders of his day to, “Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you (and) lead them by your own good example.” (1Pt.5:2a, 3b nlt) Our pastors and elders have an enormous responsibility to lead us by living a good example. We need to pray they will be able accomplish this unhindered.

For a church family to be well-led, the leadership must be prayed for daily. Satan and his demons don’t take a day off. They are eager to get a shot off at one of their favorite targets, pastors and elders. Leadership needs the encouragement they feel from the Lord through our prayers. Pastors and elders are human just as we are, they are not angels and need the hedge of protection against sin in their ministry. May we all as Christians be praying for our pastors and elders that they receive the encouragement, the care, and the teaching from the Great Shepherd growing deeper in their love for Him, for them to love, care, and feed us, God’s flock, the church of God.

Unity in the Body of Christ

“Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.” Ephesians 4:3 NLT

Photo by Edward Cisneros on Unsplash

The more our politicians try to unite us, the more divided we become. That is true around the world and here in America. Promises of uniting the country fail on the first day in office for a new president and I’m sure it will happen again in January 2025 no matter who is elected. We cannot deny we live in troubling times of division in the United States. That is why it is crucial that Christians in America are united by their bond to each other through Christ. Ephesians 4:3 says, “Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.” (nlt) Paul says, ‘make every effort.’ This is not a time to be laid back.

There is strength in numbers, but don’t let that encourage you. Our true strength is found in the Lord. Nehemiah says the ‘joy of the Lord is your strength.’ (Neh.4:10) Couple that with God’s awesome power and we will be encouraged for our days ahead. Believers in Christ need each other. Do not be a lone ranger traveling that dusty road ahead of you. Yes, you have the Holy Spirit with you, but God also gave you brothers and sisters in Christ as your family. We travel this road together having been united in the Spirit.

Jesus, in His High Priestly prayer, prayed that all who believe in Him would be one. He prayed we would be an example of perfect unity to the world, so that God’s great gift of salvation would be seen. Christians are blessed beyond measure and as we bless each other and live in peace in the strength of the Lord, others will see the love we have for one another through Christ.

In a time of such division in the United States, the only unifying factor that works is Jesus Christ. Christians can participate in the intensifying division in the nation or set the example of unity. May we all make every effort to remain united, encouraging each other as we present to the world the great unifier, Jesus Christ.

Our Message of Unity

“I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” John 17:23 NLT

Photo by Dim Hou on Unsplash

Have you ever given thought that Jesus has prayed for you? Jesus had a specific petition for all future Christians who would make up His church. Near the end of His “high priestly prayer” recorded in John’s gospel chapter 17, Jesus made His requests known soon before He was to go to the cross. He prayed that we would be with Him in eternity and see His Glory, but His specific request was that we all be one in complete unity. Imagine as Jesus was about to be crucified, His concerned for us future believers were for there to be unity. So how are we doing?

Before we answer, perhaps it would good for us to know why Jesus made this request. Jesus reasoned, ‘that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them.’ You made have heard the statement; ‘The only Christ the world will see, is the Christ they see in me.’ That is very true, and Jesus confirms it later in His prayer as He says, ‘O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you.’ (Jn.17:25 a nlt) Indeed, most of the world does not know God. Many have heard of God and have somewhat of a knowledge of Him, but they do not know the true God and Jesus Christ His Son.

As the world looks at the church and individual Christians today, do they see unity? Do they see the love of Christ between us? Are we in a unifying fashion convincing the world that Jesus is God’s Son sent to save us from eternal damnation? Does the world see their spiritual need by observing authentic Christianity in unity, or is it muddled by in-fighting, pride, and disagreements in doctrine not essential to Salvation? There are legitimate differences of opinion in the teaching of scripture in churches today, but they should not be at the expense of alienating those outside of Christ from hearing the message of the Gospel. So how are we doing in displaying our message of unity?
