What to say?

Read: Matthew 10:16-20 NLT – “Look, I am sending you out as sheep – Bible Gateway

“When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19-20 NLT

The world is increasingly becoming more hostile towards Christians both in word and deed. Here in the United States legislation has been passed over the years to stifle the voice of Christianity, while other faiths are left to be or even promoted. Many countries around the world suffer not only the same anti-Christian laws but are suffering violently under physical persecution.

Jesus warned His disciples as he sent them to preach the gospel, “But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.” (Mt.10:17-18 nlt) Jesus doesn’t guarantee us a trouble-free Christian life. Jesus was hated while He walked the earth and He is still hated today. The world hated Him then and the world hates us now. But the Lord promises never to leave us or forsake us. His Holy Sprit is always with us leading us all the way.

We are told not to worry as to what we will say when those days of persecution come upon us. Jesus tells us that God through the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say in that hour. It is a comfort to know we can count on the Lord God during these days of persecution. Perhaps you are one who have had such an experience, or a member of your family. Let us all pray for those today who are under heavy persecution for their Christian faith across the world. May they discover the peace on earth from that baby who left heaven’s glory to save us and to help know what to say.

Conspiracies and Slander

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

“O LORD, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent, those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long. Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips.” (Ps.140:1-3 nlt)

The above verses are a prayer of every Christian in the world today, especially those of us in America. There are evil people committing violent acts. They plan this evil for weeks, months, maybe a year. Their rhetoric reveals what is in their heart, only evil, and it is against Jesus Christ and His followers. Although they will say otherwise. The violent slander that protrudes from their lips is the venom of a conniving snake to destroy the innocent to advance their agenda. Their agenda;  to rid the world from those standing in the way of a global society. The justification for this hatred towards Christians is ‘we are the cause of all the evil in the world.’

Our prayer continues, “O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked. Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting against me. The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way.” (Ps.140:4-5 nlt) We Christians have a target on our backs. Evil is always scouring the landscape of Christianity to find a weak spot to infiltrate and bring us down. Sadly, we have succumbed to that all to often. We do have a gracious and merciful God who will forgive us, but sometimes the damage is already done and we have lost our influence. Beware of the traps that have been set up in our daily lives. They are there and are not going away.

Our Lord God will listen to our prayers, “I said to the LORD, ‘You are my God!’
Listen, O LORD, to my cries for mercy! O Sovereign LORD, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle.  LORD, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud.” (Ps.140:6-8 nlt) When evil people have their way and their schemes succeed, as in the assassination of Charlie Kirk, they do become proud. Celebrating the death of an innocent man for simply speaking what they disagree with is pure evil. But this shouldn’t surprise Christians. I was reminded of this fact this past Sunday of the celebration that will take place by the world at the death of the two witnesses sent by God in the end times. (Rev.11) A must read!

This prayer from the book of Psalms was first spoken by David, king of Israel, who had enemies all around him. Conspiracies and slandering were frequent in his life. David was God’s chosen king of the Jewish people. The surrounding nations hated the Jewish people and their God, therefore the constant threat towards him and Israel. Christians today are God’s chosen people, therefore the threats and slander towards us. The world hates us, because they hate Christ. Oh, they may not say it, but they do.

Let us remember Jesus’ words, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.” (Jn.15:18-19 nlt)

And let us also remember Jesus said, “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Mt.28:20 nlt)

Are you ready to give an answer?

Read: Read: 1 Peter 3:8-22 NLT – All Christians – Finally, all of you – Bible Gateway

“And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.”    1 Peter 3:15b NLT

Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash

The last two weeks in the United States have been a challenge for Christians defending their faith since the assassination of Charlie Kirk. But that hasn’t stopped them, nor should it. We are to continue to preach the gospel and be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks us about our hope in Christ.

Peter in addressing Christians scattered throughout the world suffering severe persecution wrote, “But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.” (1Pt.3:14-15 nlt) Especially when they were suffering for doing good, Peter instructed them to always be ready to explain to those who asked about their Christian hope. Peter knew most definitely that some would be asked when people observed their demeaner during insults and ridicule. (1Pt.3:9-11)

Christ followers have always suffered ridicule and persecution. Christians today are being murdered at a faster rate as any time in history. Still, we are told to always be ready to give an answer for the hope that lies within us. You can be certain when those outside of Christ see Jesus’ light in you pursuing peace and working to maintain it during ridicule and persecution they will ask, where do you get this hope that is in you?

You can respond with Peter’s words in 1 Peter 3:18, “Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.” (nlt) And you can conclude with ‘I am safely brought home and have eternal life.’ So, be ready!

“Hated in the Last Days” The Gospel of Jesus Christ: the book of Mark

Read: Mark 13:9-13 NLT – “When these things begin to happen, – Bible Gateway

“And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.” Mark 13:13 NLT

Photo by Jose P. Ortiz on Unsplash

Last week we started to look at the ‘Olivet Discourse’, Jesus’ teaching on the end times.  Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple that occurred in A.D.70. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to Jesus asking Him when that would happen thinking that represented the end times, but it did not. Jesus then preceded to explain to them the signs to watch for when these things will take place. Being two thousand years from when Jesus first gave these signs to His disciples, the signs are now for us in this present generation. Should the Lord tarry His return, these signs will be for the next generation and each one after that until He returns. But be sure, Jesus will return and these signs will continue to increase right up until that time.

Jesus warned them to watch for false prophets and those claiming to be the Christ. We have seen our share of them over the years. Jesus said there will be wars and rumors of wars between the nations, and there are an increasing number of wars in our current day. Jesus then told them to watch for earthquakes and famines across the world. Again, these have been increasing in number and severity over the years. Jesus described these as birth pains, the closer and more severe the pains, the closer the end of the pregnancy. The closer and more severe these signs are, the closer we are to the return of Christ.

Jesus tells us when we see these things happening, “…..watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.” (Mk.13:9 nlt) Persecution of Christians is rising steadily. “A new report by Open Doors International said that more than 380 million Christians faced persecution and discrimination in 2024, an increase of 15 million from the year before.” (1) State governments across the world will up their persecution of Christians as the days get closer. Jesus explains to us this we be our opportunity to tell the gospel truth about Jesus. “For the Good News must first be preached to all nations.” (Mk.13:10 nlt)

Believers are not to worry about how they will respond in that day. We will be given the words to speak through the Holy Spirit. Jesus says it will not be us speaking, but the Holy Spirit speaking through us. Jesus will not abandon us during those days. “….for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” (Heb.13:5 esv) This is the age of grace, the time between Jesus’ resurrection and His second coming. It is an evangelistic period to preach the gospel even under severe persecution. There will be a day when we will preach no more, and until that day we to be aware of the persecution that may come to us but continue to preach just the same.

Jesus warns us of the painful effects of rejection by our families. Much of that occurs today as people accept Jesus as savior and are then disowned by their families. Some individuals even seek to kill family members who have turned away from their religion and turned to Christ. Persecution is here now, and as birth pains increase, so will the persecution of Christians.

All Christians will be hated in those days because they believe in Jesus and follow Him. The world is rapidly accelerating to that point with the amount of Christian hate against those who live for God and follow His Word. Jesus reminds us in the gospel of John, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.” (Jn.15:18-19 nlt) So, we need to be aware of upcoming hate and persecution even from those we love.

The Lord gives us a word of encouragement, “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” (Mk.13:13 nlt) Perseverance in the midst of persecution is a sign of loyal service to Christ and more importantly an example of one who is totally trusting Jesus Christ for salvation. We will be saved in the end. The time of Jesus’ return and the end days are not known to us, but we have plenty of signs that it could happen at any moment. May we be ready and busy in service for Him while waiting.

Next week we examine the tribulation period as Jesus unfolds it for us………

Who is the Jesus you’re following?

Read: 1 Peter 2:18-21 ESV – Servants, be subject to your masters – Bible Gateway

“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” 1 Peter 2:21 ESV

Photo by Julia Weihe on Unsplash

Following Jesus in today’s world is not easily done. Oh sure, there are people who have no trouble following the Jesus they have set up in their mind. This Jesus is loving and kind (which He is), cares for the poor and underprivileged (which He does), and is all about justice (and He is). Following Jesus in each of these character traits is a godly endeavor every Christian should strive to achieve. But only following these traits about Jesus is not following the Biblical Jesus. It’s not following Him completely. If we are following the Biblical Jesus there will be some suffering involved. Peter tells us, ‘For to this you have been called.’

Peter was writing to Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor due to persecution for living out their faith in Christ. Living for Jesus involves all those things listed above and so much more. If attending only to those Christian deeds you probably won’t come under persecution, but if you stand for the truth of the gospel the stones will begin to fly. Peter encouraged his readers by saying, “But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called,” (1Pt.2:20-21 esv) Every true Chrisitan has received the efficacious call to salvation, and with that call the suffering of injustice when we live out and proclaim the truth of the gospel.

Jesus completed His mission in suffering and dying for our sins. That was the plan. What put Jesus on that cross was His outspoken words of truth against the religious rulers of the day. It cost Him His life, but that was the plan. Peter says Jesus left us an example that we might follow in His steps. Jesus patiently endured His suffering for us; may we patiently endure our suffering for Him. If you have not been suffering in any way for Jesus, who is the Jesus you’re following?

Persecuted Christians in Ukraine

“In the throes of the devastating war, these Christians are attacked from without and within.” (1)

Photo by Adam Śmigielski on Unsplash

One tragic lost story not being reported by most of the world’s news media is the persecution of Christians in Ukraine. This had been a reality since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine three years ago. Some may argue since Ukraine has been predominately Christian for centuries, an attack on the Ukrainian people would be an attack on Christians, that may be true, but it goes much deeper than that.

It is not surprising that Russia, still influenced by their Communist atheist past, although supportive of the Russian Orthodox church, would be persecuting Christians in Ukraine. Russia is actively persecuting their own Christian citizens today in their country. “In 2024, the United States Department of State designated Russia as ‘a country of particular concern’ due to its repression of religious freedom and believers within its borders.” (1) In an opinion piece at ‘The Christian Post’ on February 26, 2025, Steven Moore and Colby Barrett write, “Russian forces have killed 49 faith leaders in occupied Ukraine, while dozens more are being starved and beaten in Russian prison camps. More than 630 places of worship lie in ruins in Ukraine — shelled, looted, or destroyed. The Russian security services have shut down every church in occupied Ukraine they do not control and are imprisoning believers simply for holding Bible studies in their homes.” (2) ‘The Church Times’ reported on January 10, 2025 “that Christians who do not belong to the Moscow-affiliated Orthodox Church are being forced to become ‘underground believers.’” (3)

Linda Burkle Ph.D., states on ‘persecution.org’, that Christians in Ukraine are not only suffering from persecution from Russia but from their own government. Burkle writes, “Under the pretext of the war, the Ukrainian government has targeted religious organizations that are considered to have ties with Russia, such as the Russian Orthodox Church, and by default, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Legislation known as Law 3894, codified in August 2024, will be fully enforced on May 24 and effectively ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and any affiliated groups deemed to be Russian-influenced or sympathetic to Russia. Members of the UOC condemned the Russian invasion, many are serving on the front lines and raising money and support for their soldiers.” (1) For the government of Ukraine to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church when their stand on the war is well-known being in full support of their solders is nothing but an evil attempt to silence the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

This may be the most underreported story of the Russia Ukraine war, but it has not escaped the knowledge of the Lord God. He is intimately aware of every detail of what His children are going through. Our God is a righteous and just God, and He will make all things right in His timing. May we as the church be praying for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine and Russia who are suffering persecution during this time. Let us thank the Lord for those news outlets who boldly report the truth, and may we be praying for a soon end to this unprovoked war.

The Word of God Cannot be Chained

“Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained.” 2 Tinothy 2:8-9 NLT

Photo by Jose P. Ortiz on Unsplash

According to ‘Open Doors International’ more than 365 million Christians suffer high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith worldwide. (1) Many of them are imprisoned simply for sharing their faith or owning a Bible, and many are martyred. The Bible is illegal, banned, or severely restricted in 52 countries across the globe. (2) Persecution of Christians is nothing new. James, one of Jesus’ disciples was the first to be martyred for his faith in Christ. The list goes on as all the disciples were killed for their faith except John who died in exile on the island of Patmos Throughout the centuries Christians have been persecuted and the Bible forbidden, but it is noticeably escalating in these last days as Satan knows his time is running out.

The apostle Paul was well acquainted with persecution from both sides as the persecutor and the persecuted. Paul had been beaten and jailed several times for his continual preaching of the Word of God. The Bible doesn’t state Paul’s manner of death, but tradition says he also was martyred. In Paul’s second letter to his son in the faith, Timothy, he wrote he was chained like a criminal for preaching the Good News of the gospel, and then added, “But the word of God cannot be chained.” (2Tim.2:9b nlt) Paul likely foresaw the confiscation and banning of Scripture that would continue to increase over the years. But he encouraged Timothy and us that it cannot be chained.

Despite the efforts of government authorities creating laws to make it illegal to read or own a Bible, the Lord God will see to it that His Word is never chained. It cannot be, it contains the words of the living God and cannot be silenced. The world is becoming more secular everyday erasing any reference to God within its society. Eventually banning the Bible is on the horizon in every country on earth if it has not started already. Efforts will continue to increase and with greater determination to rid society of everything with a Christian nature, especially the Bible. Praise God His Words cannot be silenced or chained, for it contains the Good News!

Standing Before Pilate

‘“Don’t you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?’ Pilate demanded.” Matthew 27:13 NLT

FreeBibleimages.org

“But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” Mark 13:11 NLT

When Jesus was finally brought before Pilate the second time after the various trials in front of the Jewish rulers and an appearance before Herod, He was all but officially condemned. Pilate was amazed by Jesus’ non-response to the charges against Him from the chief priests and the elders saying, “Don’t you hear all these charges they are bringing against you?” (Mt.27:13 nlt) Jesus did confirm He was the king of the Jews when Pilate had asked Him earlier. But he would not indulge His enemies in answering the false claims put forth from them.

Jesus’ enemies would do and say anything to condemn Him, and they had up to that point. They got Jesus in front of the one who had the authority to sentence Him to death. Jesus stood before Pilate in silence to the charges against Him, but He did speak with Him as recorded in the gospel of John chapters 18 and 19. Jesus did acknowledge He was a king, but His kingdom was not of this world, and told Pilate he would have no authority over Him if it wasn’t granted to him from the Father. Jesus spoke the truth from God’s Word and put Himself in His Fathers hands.

Christians today can follow Jesus’ example when facing persecution by speaking the truth of God’s Word and relying on God in our time of need. There are all kinds of persecution in the world today. Most Christians are not facing life or death threats for their faith in Christ, but many are. Christians in the western part of the world are only starting to feel increased pressure to deny their faith as the culture is saturated with anti-God sentiment. Jesus told His disciples in Mark 13:11, “But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” (nlt)

False charges will be brought against us as Christians according to the anti-God legislation on the books, but they will be true according to Scripture. Testifying that Jesus is the Christ the only way of salvation and completely obeying His Word will need no answer. We just need to stand and wait for the Holy Spirit to speak through us. So, will we the church, be ready when we hear the charges brought against us and stand before the Pilates of our day?

“Your Sin Will Find Out” God’s Providential Hand: The book of Esther

“Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, ‘Who is he, and where is he, who has dared to do this?’” Esther 7:5 ESV

“……and be sure your sin find you out.” Numbers 32:23b ESV

Photo by Jose P. Ortiz on Unsplash

Last Sunday we left Haman in humiliation after he was blindsided by King Ahasuerus in having to parade Mordecai around the city square in recognition of his favor with the king. Haman’s plan was to get permission from the king to hang Mordecai who was rebelling against Haman’s authority as the king’s highest official. He did not get permission to hang Mordecai, and he found out just how highly King Ahasuerus thought of Mordecai. Haman knew he would soon be found out and his world would come to a crashing end.

Chapter 6 ends with the doomsday call upon Haman. “While they were still talking, the king’s eunuchs arrived and quickly took Haman to the banquet Esther had prepared.” (Es.6:14 nlt) Haman’s wife and friends surmised a fatal future for Haman. He would be found out dissolving his plan and his life at the same time. Haman didn’t have enough time to digest all the bad news he was receiving or try to make an escape before the king’s officials came and escorted him to his final meal. Sin has a way of unravelling and exposing itself. You do not always have time to make amends or change your ways before the consequences arrive. It’s too late. Haman’s time had run out.

Once again King Ahasuerus asked Esther what her request was after the meal. This time Queen Esther answered convincedly. “If I have found favor with the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my request, I ask that my life and the lives of my people will be spared. For my people and I have been sold to those who would kill, slaughter, and annihilate us.” (Es.7:3-4a nlt) If the king did not know his wife was Jewish, he knew it now, and that she would not escape the annihilation. His immediate reaction was who would do such a thing to his wife, the queen. Esther emboldened even more blurted out, “This wicked Haman is our adversary and our enemy.” (Es7:6a nlt)

Sometimes when sin is found out it comes in like a floodlight shining brightly on you exposing your sin to all in view. A variety of emotions occur, guilt, shame, remorse, anger, fear. Haman’s was fear, he was terrified. He coerced the king into agreeing to the destruction of a people’s group without naming them. The king did not need to ask Esther who was the one who did this. He would have remembered the edit he decreed by Haman’s persuasion and Haman obviously didn’t know Queen Esther was a Jew. God’s providential hand had been making all the moves in Esther being chosen queen. She was now in a position to save her people.

King Ahasuerus was outraged storming out to the palace garden while Haman pleaded for his life to Esther the queen, the only hope he had. In his frantic begging before the queen, Haman ended up falling onto the couch next to Esther at the moment the king walked in. “The king exclaimed, ‘Will he even assault the queen right here in the palace, before my very eyes?’ And as soon as the king spoke, his attendants covered Haman’s face, signaling his doom.” (Es.7:8b nlt) Harbona, one of the king’s officials noted to King Ahasuerus that a gallows was already built by Haman in his own courtyard. Then he added this for the king’s benefit, “He intended to use it to (hang) Mordecai, the man who saved the king from assassination.” (Es.7:9b nlt)

Haman was found out. He had conceived a plot for the destruction of the Jews, he was perceived to have assaulted the queen, and he planned to have Mordecai hanged. He paid a price for it as he was hanged on his own gallows in place of Mordecai. The Lord saw to it that Haman’s plans failed. God protected His chosen people and will continue to do so until Jesus’ reign in the millennium kingdom.

The Jewish people and Christians today are facing continuing threats. There are many Haman’s in the world today who want to wipe out all Christians and Jews. Freedom of religion is slowly being eroded in America and around the world. The most persecuted religious group in the world are Christians. We may suffer, but Jesus said we would. Satan knows he is running out of time and is making every move he can, but as Christ’s church, we do not need to fear. Our Lord God is the master chess player, and His moves are already planned out as with the story of Esther. The Jews were saved by another edit written by Mordecai using the king’s signet ring. Mordecai was now the king’s high official, and he wrote the Jews were to defend themselves against their annihilation by killing those attacking them and to take their property. (Es.8-10) The Jewish festival of ‘Purim’ celebrates the victory the Lord gave them that day, and the Lord will give all Christians the victory we have in Jesus over Satan as He makes His final moves.

The Attack on the Kingdom of Heaven

“And blessed is the one who is not offended by me……. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence.” Matthew 11:6, 12a ESV

Photo by Kindel Media on Pexels.com

There is an all-out effort by governments around the world to silence the Christian church, the United States included. We should not be surprised by this or think this is unique to the 21st century. It is true, persecution of Christians, attacks on churches, and labeling followers of Jesus as radicals outside the norms of society, have been steadily increasing, but attacks on Christians have been around since Jesus came to earth and declared, ‘Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’(Mt.4:17) All Christians are a part of the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus made it clear there were attacks on His kingdom in His days on earth and they have continued throughout time. He told John the Baptist’s followers since the day John started preaching repentance and preparation for the coming of the Messiah the kingdom of heaven was under attack. John had been arrested by King Herod, the ruling authority at the time. He had been put in prison and eventually executed. The kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence ever since and will continue to increase in scope until the day of Jesus’ return.

There is a silver lining to this dark cloud of attacks against Christians. Jesus said, ‘blessed is the one who is not offended by me.’ (Mt.11:6) When we are not offended by Christ by standing firm in His truth we will be blessed. Jesus didn’t say we won’t be attacked, or arrested and sent to prison, or worse, no, He said we are blessed. The persecution that has been prevalent in many parts of the world has found its way to America’s shores. It may not as brutal or intense as in other countries, but the groundwork has been laid to remove God, His Word, and His way of salvation from all education and government institutions. Freedom to speak the truth of God’s Word even from the pulpit is rapidly being considered hate speech and subject to prosecution.

Christians will be attacked, that is of course when we are not offended by the name of Jesus as the only way of salvation and are offended by the rules and regulations of our godless society. Being silent during these days is not an option. It either signals our approval that we are not offended by anti-God legislation, or it shows our weakness and lack of faith in the God we serve. The assault on Christians is here to stay, it’s not going away. Remember the Lord God promises to be with us and promises us His blessings especially when we are attacked for His name.
