“The Ministry Begins” The Good News of Jesus Christ: the book of Mark

“Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.” Mark 1:21, 39 NLT

The Good News of Jesus Christ is about to be told from Jesus Himself, for that is why he came. “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mk.1:38, 10:45 nlt) Jesus’ ministry is now in in full operation after His baptism, forty days in the wilderness being tempted by Satan, and choosing four fishermen to be His disciples. “Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach.” (Mk.1:21 nlt)

Jesus begins His first of three tours through Galilee. The first stop Jesus made was to visit the local synagogue in Capernaum. It was where the Scriptures were read and studied, and God was worshiped. Jesus took advantage of the custom of having a visiting teacher speak and participate in teaching. As He began to speak, the people were amazed at His teaching compared to the local Rabbis. Jesus taught not as the other Rabbis who referred to and quoted previous Rabbinical teaching, but Jesus taught with authority, His own authority. It was not only His authoritative style, but the content of His teaching that impressed those in attendance. Jesus, the Son of God, certainly knew the Scriptures.   

Satan and his demons also knew the Scriptures and who Jesus is as was evident by the demon-possessed man among them. “Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit began shouting, ‘Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!’” (Mk.1:23-24 nlt) This demon-spirit knew Jesus was God the Son and was terrified at Jesus’ power. Jesus stopped the demon’s ranting immediately and ordered him to come out of the man. He didn’t want His identity known at this time. The demon left the man, and the people were yet in more amazement to what they just witnessed. They reasoned among themselves, ‘what kind of teaching is this, that even the demons obey Him?’ At this point, the news about Jesus spread quickly throughout Galilee.

Jesus’ act of confronting the evil spirit drew much attention which is now going to escalate even further as He is beginning to heal all those who are sick and diseased. Jesus begins by healing Simon’s mother-in-law after the meeting at the synagogue. Jesus and His disciples go to Simon’s and Andrew’s home. Finding Simon’s mother-in-law sick with a high fever, Jesus touched her, healing her. After sunset when the Sabbath was over many people from all over converged on Simon’s and Andrew’s home. “That evening after sunset, many sick and demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. The whole town gathered at the door to watch.” (Mk.1:32-33 nlt) Jesus is ministering as He predicted, ‘the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.’

As is often the case today, we call upon Jesus to help us in our time of need. He will not deny our request but will hear us and answer in accordance with His will. How sad it is so many of us only call upon the Lord only in the case of an emergency. He is our Lord and savior when things are bad and when all is well. Jesus came to sacrifice His life to give us the ultimate healing, a soul set free, and eternal life with Him. He desires for us to have constant fellowship with Him throughout our lives here on earth and not wait until we’re with Him in glory.

Jesus valued His time in prayer with His heavenly Father. After a long day of teaching, healing, and casting out demons, Jesus rose early the next morning, probably between 3-4 am going to a secluded place to pray. It was where Jesus, the man, met His spiritual battles. Satan and his demons constantly opposed Jesus all throughout His ministry. It was also where Jesus prepared Himself with conversations with His Father for the day’s work in ministry. If Jesus needed to do this, do we have any excuse for not doing it? We need it a lot more.

While traveling through Galilee preaching in the synagogues Jesus is met by a leper who knelt before Him begging to be healed. ‘“If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,’ he said. Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be healed!’” (Mk.1:40b-41 nlt) Leprosy was one of the most dreadful diseases during Jesus’ day. We should take note of the leper’s faith in Jesus that He could heal him. This is a testimony in Jesus’ power to heal such a terrible disease. Jesus then instructed the man to show himself to the priest to be declared clean so he could resume social contact. The priest could not deny the man was healed, and that only God had the power to cure leprosy.  Afterward the man went out and told everyone about his healing. Quickly it was impossible for Jesus to continue His ministry in the towns but needed to move out into the nearby fields around the cities. Jesus’ ministry is off to a fast start and will continue at a fast pace, for His time in preaching, teaching, healing, and casting out evil spirits is relatively short, three- and one-half years. Where to Find True Miracles: God’s Power Today

Do you need a miracle in your life, something that contradicts all known scientific laws? Where do you go to look for this miracle? There is only one place to go, but the world has its own recommendations to consider keeping you from going to the true source. For instance, the god of this world, Satan, would have you believe that coincidence or random occurrences in your favor are only by chance, denying any divine supernatural power. Some may look for that divine power, but they look in all the wrong places. Many are caught in false religions of the world promising hope and miracles only to find themselves less wealthy and being accused of not having enough faith. Others put their faith in gods of astrology, and various gods presented and worshiped as divine throughout the centuries. None of these possess divine supernatural power to perform miracles. They are not the God of heaven, who alone does mighty miracles.

The question many people ask is this; does God still perform miracles today? The answer is, yes, absolutely! The greatest miracle is a soul set free, and God through the Holy Spirit performs this miracle daily. Scores of people are being radically changed forever from a wayward life every day by accepting God’s only Son Jesus Christ as their savior. People even the world thought were beyond hope, change, and redemption are living a clean life for the Lord and serving others.

Yes, miracles are still happening today. A radically changed person does defy all known scientific laws without divine help. It is the spiritually dead coming to life, everlasting life in Christ. It’s happening every day. Have you received your saving miracle yet, if not do so today!

The Unrepentant

We have all heard the saying, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ Truth is often revealed by an un-expecting snapshot, or a video capturing the events of an altercation. It is hard to deny the obvious when closely examining the material presented. Opinions change as facts become a reality. The truth becomes known regardless of the narrative that is being presented.  Unfortunately there are those who will refuse to believe what the eyes see due to their indifference towards the truth as they view it.

Tragically the truth about God is being dismissed by those who are indifferent to the things of God, even though He has revealed Himself to us. The apostle Paul writing in Romans explains, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Ro.1:20 esv) Yet there are those who investigate other places, even within themselves to find the truth, to find the meaning of life, and to find the good in themselves. They fail to find the need for repentance before a holy God, even though they see miracles all around them.

Jesus denounced several cities in the New Testament, especially Capernaum, due to their unrepentance. He performed miracles in Chorazin and Bethsaida, outskirts of nearby Capernaum, and they were unresponsive to them. And in Capernaum, where Jesus made His ministry headquarters, the results were the same. Those who have seen Jesus, witnessed His miracles and heard Him preach of the kingdom of God, were indifferent to Him and their need to follow Him. Jesus’ words were strong towards them for their unrepentance, “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades.” (Mt.11:20a esv)

Today the same situation exists with even more responsibility. The knowledge of God and His plan for salvation through His Son Jesus Christ is made available in ways that would have been unimaginable in Jesus’ day. As Capernaum had a greater responsibility put upon them with Jesus conducting His business right in their hometown, we have an enormous responsibility to repent of the failure to get the Word out as Christ’s church. And for those who are indifferent to the God of the Bible and His Son Jesus, a greater knowledge of God is available to you in our day. Do not be denounce by Jesus for being one of the unrepentant.

Spiritual Blindness

The lure of having power and influence have corrupted even the most prestigious individuals. The love of being in control causes blindness to everything that is right, logical, and all that is common sense. Examples are easy to find in the rhetoric and actions of some government officials of our day. They desire to control, not for the betterment of those they serve, but for themselves and those who have supported them and their causes. Powerful people in the market place are also capable of falling into the same trap. They are blinded along with the politicians and government leaders by their own love of power, wealth, and recognition. The truth is before their eyes, but they fail to see it.

The Pharisees in the New Testament had a power problem themselves resulting in spiritual blindness. They were the religious ruling power. Knowing the Law, both the Old Testament and the traditional Laws set forth over the years, they used their knowledge to elevate themselves to a position of control. This rise to power had blinded them to what they knew the Old Testament revealed about Jesus the Messiah. The many additional Laws enacted over the years blinded them further as to the need for them, except to keep them in power that they were not willing to give up.

Matthew 12:10 records for us Jesus being asked a question by the Pharisees, “‘Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?’ (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.)” Healing on the Sabbath would have been a violation of the Law bringing charges against Jesus, although the Old Testament does not reference it. The rabbis considered healing attempts as work unless the individual was close to death which was not the case in this instance. They were obviously using another manmade law which was illogical and lacking common sense.

The Pharisees had corrupted themselves through their desire for power and influence. They had blinded themselves to who they were dealing with. They did not want to hear Jesus say the word ‘yes,’ but to perform the healing on the Sabbath. They knew Jesus had the power to heal the man, but their hated for Him and the thought of losing their power forced blindness upon them. Getting rid of Jesus was their only priority. “Then (Jesus) said to the man, ‘Hold out your hand.’ So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one! Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus.” (Mt. 12:13-14 nlt)

Lest we think we, as Christians, are incapable of such spiritual blindness, think again. Christians are very capable of spiritual blindness when desires are place ahead of God’s will and contrary to His Word. Whether it is power and influence we seek, or a pleasurable desire outside of God’s will, be sure blindness will overshadow God and all His holiness. Let us be careful not to allow anything into our lives that will cause us to have spiritual blindness.

Recognizing the Messiah; the Light of the World

            Our world is currently going through dark times, in fact we could say it seems that total darkness cannot be far away. Darkness in the world has troubled humankind since the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Although I must admit darkness has been progressing deeper into our society blinding any light trying to dispel it. The apostle Paul addressed this in his letter to the church at Ephesus by saying, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Eph. 6:12) Also in writing to Timothy he said, “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.” (2 Tim. 3:1) Our world is certainly a dark place and growing darker.

            But rest assured for all is not lost for the believer in Christ. Even in the darkness of our world, Christians can live in the light of Jesus Christ, and in the light of His Word. John writing about Jesus said, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it….The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” (Jn. 1:5, 9) Jesus is the true and only light in the world.

            The world is in darkness due to all of mankind being in darkness, spiritual darkness. We are in spiritual darkness due to our sin nature and nothing will eradicate the darkness except the light of Christ in our lives. All of us are in need of confessing our sin and accepting Jesus Christ, the light of the world, as our savior.

            The gospel of Matthew tells the story of two blind men who were aware that Jesus was soon to pass their way. They were also aware that He was the true Messiah, God the Son, who was able to cure their blindness. As they sat by the roadside, they shouted out to Jesus, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us.’ By referring to Jesus as the Son of David, they were confirming their belief that He was the true Jewish Messiah who was to come. They had need of physical healing of blindness and asked to receive their sight, knowing that He who heal spiritual blindness is able to heal physical blindness. They believed in Jesus’s divine power.

            Have you recognized the true Messiah, the true and only light of the world, Jesus Christ? The two blind men above recognized Him as the only one who could cure their physical and spiritual blindness. Scripture says, “Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.” (Mt. 20:34) We are living in a dark world, but we do not need to live in a dark spiritual world. Receive the light of the world and gain your spiritual sight and follow Him.
