“ And this shall be the sign to you that the LORD has anointed you to be prince over his heritage…….Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.” 1 Samuel 10:1, 7 ESV
Saul, Israel’s first king, did not have an exceptional resume for the job. He was from the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest of the twelve tribes, and his family was the smallest in that smallest tribe. Saul worked on his father’s farm. He was not one to seek the limelight and did not particularly have an interest in spiritual things of God. His best and only feature was his height. Saul fit the bill of what the people were looking for in their first king. They wanted someone who could go out and fight their battles for them. Saul was a big and tall strong man who looked like a king from the other nations which the people also desired. God granted their wish and had Samuel anoint Saul as their king.
Saul, himself, was the last person who thought he should have been Israel’s first king. He felt unqualified. The Lord knew this and gave Saul signs through the prophet Samuel that this is God’s will and he would be king over Israel, God’s people. The Lord gave Saul a series of three signs to confirm that he was chosen to be king, verses 2-7 in the text for today. Assurance was given to Saul for him to continue with no hesitation. This was God’s will.
You may be feeling the call of God to a particular ministry, or job, or any number of things and you feel unqualified. But be assured of this, if the call is real, a call of God, you will know. He will give you signs without you asking for them. They will just show up. You will become more confident with each sign that comes and soon you will find yourself taking that step. It also works the other way too. No signs means no call, or signs may lead you to see it is not what God wants for you just now. Pray for wisdom and discernment during these times. The Lord will always answer with signs from heaven.
