Use It or Lose It

“When thou takest away my outward blessings, it is for sin,

in not acknowledging that all I have is of thee,

in not serving thee through what I have,

in making myself secure and hardened.”  (1)

There is an old hymn entitled “Count Your Blessings.” The chorus goes, ‘Count your blessings-name them one by one; Count your blessings-see what God hath done; Count your blessings-name them one by one; Count your many blessings-see what God hath done.’ (2) I’m sure most of us have see God’s blessings in our lives. If we take the time to count them, we will be overwhelmed in all God has done for us. With so many blessings we probably even forgot one or two. God not only blesses us for ourselves, but to share His blessings with others.

What has God blessed you with? What has He and gifted you with that can help present the gospel and be shared with others? The Lord may have blessed you with musical talent. Are you using that talent to the best of your ability to serve Him? The Lord may have blessed you with a brilliant mind in science, are you using it for His glory? You may be blessed with leadership skills, are you a part of an organization or company that can benefit having a Christian working among them. Whatever recognizable talent God has blessed you with can be and should be used for Him.

Some of you may feel you’re a small cog in a big wheel, but that cog is extremely vital. You’re a small piece of the puzzle, but without that piece, the picture is not complete. Take note how God has blessed you and use what he has given you to serve Him and others. School districts need crossing guards and hall monitors, not only science teachers. Churches and concert venues need ushers and set up crews for the service or concert to run smoothly. All organizations and companies need hands-on individuals who support the work through whatever their responsibilities are.

Count your blessings naming them one by one using and sharing them for God’s glory whether in public, your neighborhood, or in the home. They are yours to use or to lose. “So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents.” (Mt.25:28 esv)

Give your best to the Lord

“Cursed is the cheat who promises to give a fine ram from his flock but then sacrifices a defective one to the Lord.” Malachi 1:14a NLT

Successful athletes sacrifice much in striving to achieve the best they can be. When reaching the pinnacle of being able to perform at a high level, they do not slack off, but continue to give their best. Their desire is to see the results of heavy training, a healthy diet, and the sacrificing of creature comforts. Giving their best is self-satisfying and pleasing to teammates in a team sport. When one does not give their best in the sporting world it is very noticeable. Teammates and fans alike recognize it immediately and one’s individual statistics cannot hide the fact. Giving a lackluster performance when one is more than capable to step it up by giving their best is, well let’s say, cheating.

God accused Israel of cheating by not giving their best sacrifice. They had it in their power to do so, they had their best, and even promised to do so, but chose to not give it. God demanded the very best, an unblemished animal, for sacrifice. Israel thought they would get by offering a less than stellar performance but they did not get away with it.

Christians today will also not get away with not giving their best in serving the Lord. God is holy and He demands the best that each one of us is capable of doing. He will call us out. We cannot hide or get away with it. The talents and gifts the Lord has given to us are to be used for His honor and His glory to the best of our ability. Although I am a sports enthusiast I was never much of an athlete, but the Lord has given me other talents that I am to use in serving Him. All of us have the opportunity and capability, with the Lord’s help, to give our best. Give your best to the Lord!

Are you hiding your talent?

“But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money.” Matthew 25:18 ESV

Where do your talents lie? In what areas do you excel? Do others notice your gifts and talents? Have you been encouraged to use your talents more effectively? If you are like me, you know there are certain things you are good at, some things you are really good at, and then there is one talent or gift that surpasses all expectations. And if you’re like me, my friends and family know that the gift and talent is from the Lord, it’s certainly not me. Believe me there are many more things I am not good at than what I am good at. But what I am good at, the Lord expects it to be used for His Glory and His Kingdom and that is the standard for all Christians.

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells the “Parable of the Talents” (Matt. 25:14-30) concerning the coming of the kingdom. In the parable, a man going on a journey entrusts to each of his three servants’ talents (money) to be used and invested until he returns. Each one is given according to his ability as to what he is capable of handling. One receives five talents, one receives two, and another received one. The Bible says the one who received five talents immediately went out and did business with them doubling the investment. Likewise the one who had two did the same. But the third one did nothing with his talent actually burying it in the ground for safe keeping, so he thought. Upon returning, the man was well pleased with the first two servants. They faithfully used the talents given to them by their master. Not so with the third, he was not pleased at all, in fact he called him wicked and lazy. The servant hid the talent his master gave him. There wasn’t anything to show for it.

Wherever your talents lie, are you using them for the Lord? Are you using them to advance the gospel? Are others in your community being helped by them? Is your workplace benefitting by your use of them? Have you had opportunity to use them in your social and recreation time with friends and family? Are you using your talents for the Lord or are you hiding them?
